As the mother of an 8 year old Autistic son, I know the importance of spreading the Autism Awareness message.  We need to educate one another and realize that Autism has become an epidemic in this country!  Educate yourself and your neighbors, your friends and family.....and never think that it can't happen to you.  That's what I thought.....and I was wrong.

What is Autism?  It is a disorder that has reached an unacceptable number.  It now effects 1 in every 150 children. Mostly effecting boys (5 boys to 1 girl) Or you could even say 1 in 70 boys are Autistic.  These children have problems with social skills, language and usage.  Simply put...they often can not communicate and build relationships or know how to interact socially.  They often have rituals or repetitive behaviors and will avoid eye contact. Sensory issues often plague them & some children may never verbally speak.  They don't hit their early milestones like most children do.  They don't smile when they should, they don't talk when they should, they don't look your way when you call their name...but they hear you.

I could go on with many more examples but the truth is that every Autistic child is different.  The spectrum is so broad that one child may be inflicted so severely that he needs to be institutionalized.  While another child with Autism may appear to be a future rocket scientist.....and there are millions more children somewhere in between those two.

If you are a person who has an autistic child or know someone who does, then you are not alone anymore.  There are millions upon millions of us out there now who are ready and willing to help one another...to stand up and fight for our children and their rights, or to lend an ear or a shoulder.  It's a long road, but we are all in this together. 

If you suspect that your child may not be developing as he or she should be....please don't wait, contact your Dr. immediately.  With Autism,  EARLY INTERVENTION IS KEY!!!!  I can not stress that enough...don't wait for things to get better on their own....they won't.   And remember...your gut instinct is your best tool....as has been proven by my own personal experiences (and many others as well).

*Autism is NOT a dead-end diagnosis.  It's the beginning of a new journey.  A journey that you DO have some control over.  You can make a difference in a child's life by not giving up.  You will be surprised at what wonderful & amazing things you will find hidden inside your child.....things that they can't wait to get out, but they need our help!  Let's make everyone aware of the importance of this diagnosis, the need for a cure, and to help everyone know, that just because a child can't speak....doesn't mean he has nothing to say!*
